Portugal 8 Days: Lisbon-Porto-Douro Route with Real Costs

A week in Lisbon costs roughly half what an equivalent week in Barcelona does. That's not tourism marketing — it's the number that makes or breaks Portugal as a destination depending on your budget. This article builds three complete financial scenarios for the Lisbon → Porto → Douro Valley route over 8 days, with the math laid out so you can verify every number before you book.

The route and why this order makes logistical sense

The Lisbon → Porto → Douro sequence isn't arbitrary. Lisbon handles the majority of direct or one-stop flights from Latin America, which makes it the natural entry point for most travelers.

Porto sits 335 km to the north. The transfer is fast and cheap. The Douro Valley works best as a day trip or overnight from Porto — it doesn't have the same hotel infrastructure or flight connections as the two main cities.

The day breakdown looks like this:

- Lisbon: three nights (days 1 to 4)

- Porto: three nights (days 4 to 7)

- Douro Valley: a day trip from Porto (day 6)

- Return or onward connection: day 8

This order eliminates unnecessary backtracking. You make better use of your time and cut transport costs. If your departure flight leaves from Lisbon, simply flip the last two days. The itinerary adapts without any fuss.

Getting there: the cost before you set foot in Portugal

The transatlantic flight is the most variable line item. It depends on your origin city, when you buy, and how flexible your dates are. Based on our estimates using historical routes for 2025–2026, approximate ranges from Latin American cities are:

- Mexico City → Lisbon: approximately €550–€900 per person in economy, with a stopover in Madrid, Paris, or Amsterdam

- Bogotá → Lisbon: approximately €500–€800, with a European stopover

- Buenos Aires → Lisbon: approximately €600–€950, with a stopover

July and August push fares up sharply. April–May and September–October offer noticeably lower prices with comfortable walking temperatures. Booking three or four months out and accepting ±3 days of flexibility typically cuts the ticket price by €150 to €200 per person.

Accommodation: what sleeping in each city actually costs

Lisbon

Lisbon has plenty of options, but the neighborhood drives the price and the experience. Alfama, Bairro Alto, and Baixa-Chiado are the most in-demand and the most expensive. Mouraria and Intendente offer more reasonable prices without giving up metro or tram access.

Based on our estimates using data from world-prices.com/es/portugal/precios and losviajeros.com, approximate per-night ranges in Lisbon for 2026 are:

- Hostel or guesthouse (dorm bed): €20–€35 per person

- Three-star hotel or standard guesthouse: €70–€110 per double room

- Boutique or four-star hotel: €130–€200 per double room

- Luxury or five-star hotel: €250–€500+ per double room

Porto

Porto tends to run ten to twenty percent cheaper than Lisbon. Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia have good-quality hostels and guesthouses with river views.

Based on our estimates:

- Hostel or guesthouse: €18–€30 per person

- Three-star hotel: €60–€95 per double room

- Boutique or four-star hotel: €110–€175 per double room

- Luxury or five-star hotel: €200–€400+ per double room

Tourism tax

Both Lisbon and Porto charge a municipal fee per night. Check the current amount directly at visitlisboa.com and porto.pt before you travel. These rates are updated frequently and we don't have confirmed figures for 2026.

Getting around: transport between cities

Lisbon → Porto

The CP Alfa Pendular train covers 335 km in about two hours and forty-five minutes. Based on our estimates, a standard-class ticket costs approximately €25–€35 per person when you book ahead at cp.pt. Last-minute prices can climb to €45–€55.

The bus (Rede Expressos or FlixBus) takes between three and a half and four hours and costs approximately €15–€22 per person. It's cheaper, but the savings rarely justify the lost time on an eight-day trip.

Porto → Douro Valley

Three real options with different price tags:

1. CP regional train from São Bento to Pinhão: approximately €12–€15 per person round trip. The scenery along the way is part of the experience.

2. Organized tour from Porto including transport, lunch, and a winery visit: approximately €60–€90 per person.

3. Rental car: approximately €35–€55 per day plus fuel. Worth it if you're traveling in a group of three or more.

City transport in Lisbon and Porto

Use the rechargeable Viva Viagem card in Lisbon and the Andante card in Porto. A single trip costs approximately €1.50–€1.90. For three nights in each city, budget €15–€20 per person for city transport in total.

Food: where Portugal makes the biggest difference

This is where Portugal really pulls away. A full lunch with wine at a local tasca costs approximately €10–€15 per person. The same meal in Barcelona or Madrid easily runs €18–€25.

Daily food spending breakdown, based on our estimates:

- Budget: breakfast at a local café (€2–€3) + lunch at a tasca or market (€8–€12) + dinner at a budget restaurant (€12–€18) = approximately €22–€33 per day

- Mid-range: breakfast at the hotel or a café (€5–€8) + lunch at a standard restaurant (€15–€20) + dinner with wine (€25–€40) = approximately €45–€68 per day

- Luxury: restaurants with wine lists, seafood, and full dining experiences = approximately €90–€150+ per day

Bacalhau in its many preparations, petiscos, and vinho verde let you eat well without spending much. A bottle of vinho verde at a restaurant costs approximately €8–€12.

Summary table: three scenarios for 8 days

The following figures are per person, in euros, for eight days (seven nights: three in Lisbon, three in Porto, one day trip to the Douro with no extra overnight). International flights are not included.

Portugal vs. Spain: the comparison that matters

Many Latin American travelers weigh Portugal and Spain at the same time. The cost gap is concrete.

Based on our estimates and data from world-prices.com:

- Three-star hotel in Lisbon: approximately €80 per night vs. €110–€130 in Barcelona (30–40% difference)

- Lunch at a local restaurant: approximately €12 in Lisbon vs. €18–€22 in Madrid (35–45% difference)

- Beer or glass of wine at a bar: approximately €1.50–€2.50 in Lisbon vs. €3–€5 in Barcelona

For a mid-range traveler, eight days in Portugal costs approximately €300–€450 less than the equivalent in Spain. That difference sometimes covers your return flight. Portugal's cost of living is structurally lower and you feel it in every single category.

What quietly drains your budget

Three categories travelers consistently underestimate:

1. Lisbon's historic trams. The 28 and the 15E are attractions as much as transport. An organized tour can cost €20–€25 per person. If you just need to get somewhere, take the metro or a bus.

2. Wine tastings in the Douro. A basic visit costs approximately €15–€25 per person. Premium experiences with a paired lunch reach €80–€120. That €60–€90 gap per person adds up fast if you're traveling as a couple.

3. Taxis or Uber from the airport. Lisbon Airport has a direct metro connection (red line, approximately €1.65). A taxi or Uber runs €15–€20. If you're in a group, Uber can make sense; if you're traveling solo, the metro is the rational choice.

When to go: how the calendar affects your budget

Peak season (June–August) pushes accommodation prices up 30 to 60% compared to shoulder season. April–May and September–October offer ideal walking temperatures of 18–24°C and noticeably lower prices.

Traveling in May or September can save you €150–€250 on accommodation alone over eight days. You get the full experience and skip the crowds.

The financial verdict

Portugal over eight days has a realistic local-cost range of €469 to €2,497 per person, based on our estimates. The mid-range scenario of approximately €1,132 is a fair representation of the Latin American traveler who wants reasonable comfort: a three-star hotel, local restaurants with wine, efficient transport, and a handful of paid attractions.

Add the international flight (approximately €600–€900 from Mexico or Colombia) and the total cost of a mid-range trip lands between €1,700 and €2,100 per person. That makes it competitive against other European destinations at the same level.

The best trip isn't the most expensive one or the cheapest one — it's the best-reasoned one.

Documents: what you need to check before booking

Starting in 2025, Latin American travelers entering the Schengen Area need to factor in ETIAS and the EES biometric entry registration system. Check whether your nationality requires ETIAS at etias.com and look into actual border entry times, which can add minutes at the checkpoint.

Check the current status of both systems directly on the official European Parliament website before you travel. Implementation dates have shifted multiple times.
